A tradition of safety 1989 - 1999

Opel owes its current high safety standards to many years of consistent development work. A chronicle of the most significant development in the past 70 years is presented here.

1989 - All Omega models given ABS as standard.

1991 - All Vectra and Calibra models are supplied with standard anti-lock braking system (ABS). The newly introduced Astra featured the Opel Safety System with side intrusion protection in the doors, an active belt system with mechanical tensioners and anti-submarining ramps in the seats.

1993 - In Germany Vectra CD/V6/Special and Astra GSi/GSi 16V/Sportive models were supplied with a driver's airbag as standard.

1994 - Presentation of the Opel Omega "Isotec" concept car with advanced electronic technology to improve active vehicle safety still further.

1995 - In Germany all Opel cars now with standard driver's and passenger's airbags.

1997 - Opel introduces side airbags for driver and passenger.

1998 - The "Opel Fix" modular child seat system is versatile, simple to handle and comfortable. The patent coupling system makes the seat easy to use and provides outstanding stability and safety.

1999 - Opel was the first German car manufacturer to introduce Active Head Restraints for front seats of Astra, Zafira, Vectra and Omega.
